PSHE
Proverbs 22:6
“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old, they shall not turn from this.”
Intent
At St Michael’s Primary School, our intention of our Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education curriculum is to provide a comprehensive and progressive framework to equip our pupils with essential life skills and knowledge that will enable them to become responsible and well-rounded individuals in society. Our curriculum is designed to meet the needs of all pupils, ensuring that they develop a deep understanding of a range of topics including relationships, safety, health and financial literacy. Our PSHE curriculum is carefully structured to promote the spiritual, social and cultural development of our pupils in line with the statutory requirements set out in the National Curriculum. It is underpinned by a clear set of values and ethos (love, creativity, integrity and resilience) that are embedded throughout the school community, fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment where every pupil feels valued and respected. Our PSHE curriculum allows pupils to possess a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and they are supported in playing a positive role in contributing to an everchanging society. We provide opportunities for pupils to acquire the curiosity and confidence to question, challenge and reflect.
Early Years Building Blocks
PSED is one of the three prime areas within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Each prime area is divided into early learning goals, for PSED these are:
- Self-Regulation - Show an understanding of their own feelings and those of others, and begin to regulate their behaviour accordingly; - Set and work towards simple goals, being able to wait for what they want and control their immediate impulses when appropriate; Give focused attention to what the teacher says, responding appropriately even when engaged in activity, and show an ability to follow instructions involving several ideas or actions.
- Managing Self - Be confident to try new activities and show independence, resilience and perseverance in the face of challenge; explain the reasons for rules, know right from wrong and try to behave accordingly; manage their own basic hygiene and personal needs, including dressing, going to the toilet and understanding the importance of healthy food choices.
- Building Relationships - Work and play cooperatively and take turns with others; Form positive attachments to adults and friendships with peers; Show sensitivity to their own and to others' needs.
Implementation
The implementation of the PSHE curriculum at St Michael’s is characterised by a comprehensive and cohesive approach that permeates all aspects of school life. It encompasses high-quality teaching and learning experiences that are tailored to the needs of individual pupils and reflect the diverse backgrounds within the school community.
Teachers ensure that PSHE is taught in a progressive manner, building upon prior knowledge and skills at each stage of a pupil’s development. Through a variety of interactive and engaging teaching methods, including circle time, role play, and real-life scenarios, pupils are actively involved in their learning, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility for their personal development.
Our PSHE lessons are structured around the three core themes of Health and wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World. It is taught weekly and is delivered by the class teachers. Topics are also focused upon as they arise throughout the week in class and build upon experiences that are discussed within our daily worships. We promote critical thinking, empathy and decision making skills. We use arrange of resources, including guest speakers and online platforms to enhance the learning experience.
We place a strong emphasis on cross-curricular links, integrating PSHE themes into other subjects to provide a holistic and interconnected learning experience. This approach enables pupils to see the relevance of PSHE in their daily lives and reinforces the importance of applying their knowledge and skills across different contexts. As a school, we also recognises the significance of involving parents and carers in the PSHE education of their children, fostering positive partnerships that reinforce learning both in and outside the school environment.
Impact
The impact of our PSHE curriculum is evidenced through the positive outcomes and behaviours exhibited by our pupils both within the school community and in their wider lives. Through regular assessment, feedback and reflection, we track the progress and development of emotional resilience, social skills, healthy lifestyles choices, and understanding of diversity and inclusion.
Our pupils demonstrate increased self-confidence, improved communication skills and a heightened sense of empathy and respect towards others. They are able to make informed choices about their health and wellbeing, form positive relationships with their peers and contribute positively to the school ethos and community.
Our PSHE curriculum also prepares pupils for life beyond our school, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to navigate challenges, make responsible decisions and become active citizens in society.
