Physical Education

Intent

At St Michael’s Primary school, our intention is to deliver a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to have a lifelong passion for PE, which in turn will enable them to succeed and excel in competitive and non-competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. We aim to provide opportunities for all pupils to become physically confident in the FUNdamentals and sport specific skills, irrelevant of their needs. We believe that opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect, as well as our school values of love, integrity, creativity and resilience.

Our curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils develop the competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities, are physically active for sustained periods of time and gives them the tools and knowledge to lead happy, healthy and active lives now and into adulthood.

Implementation

  • Minimum of 2hrs of high-quality PE per week taught by a mixture of class teachers, specialist PE teachers and external sports coaches.
  • Participation in the ‘Daily Mile’ on non-PE days- logging the children’s laps so they can track their progress
  • Sports equipment available on the playgrounds during lunchtime
  • Gym equipment installed on the playground for use at break and lunchtime.
  • Yr.6 Play Leaders to run structured activities and games for all children.
  • Boccia club
  • Outdoor Learning (Foundation Stage)
  • Year 5 trip to Kingswood Outdoor Activity Centre
  • Participation in NWESSP and BDPSSA competitions
  • Annual Sports Week where children are given the opportunity to try sports outside of our curriculum
  • Participation in the TCS Mini London Marathon
  • Swimming

Teachers carry out formative assessment within the lesson and pupils are encouraged to reflect on their own performances. Our children benefit from developing their understanding of fair play, leadership skills and rules and knowledge of a wide range of sports.

Impact

At St Michael’s, our PE curriculum has a positive impact on our pupils’ social, emotional and physical wellbeing. In the Youth Sport Trust Survey 2023, 95% of girls and 93% of boys in KS2 said that they enjoy PE lessons. Sighting having fun, being with friends and getting fit and healthy as their top three motivators for being active at school. Our pupils consistently demonstrate high levels of sportsmanship and teamwork, reflecting our school values of love and resilience. From our curriculum, all pupils have the opportunity to develop their physical literacy and maintain a healthy active lifestyle. We have seen an improvement in pupils’ physical fitness, coordination and self-confidence, as well as their enjoyment and engagement levels. This is reflected in our successes at sports competitions, reaching multiple county finals each year. We listen to the views of all of our pupils, to ensure that we are meeting their needs and interests, and we use this feedback to extend our curriculum offer and improve our provision. In our PE curriculum, we are committed to continuing to provide high-quality, inclusive and inspiring opportunities for all of our pupils.
